Valuation and claims
What is covered if something gets damaged.
Plain answers before you book: what basic coverage pays, when it is not enough, and how a claim works.
Basic coverage: $0.60 per pound, per item
Every local and long-distance move with Green Van Lines includes basic released-value protection at no extra charge. If an item is lost or damaged while it is in our care, we are responsible for up to $0.60 per pound for that item. The amount depends on the item’s weight, not on what it cost.
That works for heavy, low-value items. It does not come close to replacing a television, a computer, artwork or a family heirloom. A 50-pound television, for example, is covered up to $30. We would rather you know that now than after the move.
When you need more protection
- Check your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance. Many policies cover belongings in transit or can add it for a move.
- Third-party moving insurance can cover the declared value of your goods.
- Tell us about high-value or fragile items before moving day so we can pack, crate and load them for the trip.
- Carry cash, jewelry, documents, medication and small electronics with you rather than on the truck.
How to file a claim
- Note any visible damage on the delivery paperwork before the crew leaves.
- Take clear photos of the item and the packaging.
- Send a written claim through our contact page with your name, move date, the item, its approximate weight and the photos.
- We confirm we received it and work the claim with you directly.
For moves between states, federal rules give you nine months from delivery to file a written claim. Filing sooner always makes a claim easier to settle.
Coverage questions
What does my move include for damage coverage?
Every Green Van Lines move includes basic released-value protection at no extra charge. It covers up to $0.60 per pound for each item that is lost or damaged, based on the weight of that item.
How much would I get for a damaged item?
Multiply the weight of the item by $0.60. A 50-pound television is covered up to $30, and a 100-pound dresser up to $60, whatever the item cost to buy.
Is $0.60 per pound enough for valuable items?
Usually not for electronics, art, antiques or anything light but expensive. Before your move, check whether your homeowner’s or renter’s insurance covers belongings in transit, or buy separate moving insurance, and tell us about high-value items so we can pack and load them accordingly.
How do I report damage?
Note it on the delivery paperwork before the crew leaves if you can, take photos, and then send us a written claim with the photos, the item, its weight if you know it, and your move date. We confirm receipt and work the claim with you directly.
How long do I have to file a claim?
File as soon as possible. For moves between states, federal rules give you nine months from delivery to file a written claim. For moves within Texas, contact us right away so we can inspect the item while the details are fresh.
